Is there any conclusion of a general kind which it is possible to draw from these different studies ? One of the characteristics of urban society is its heterogeneity. That is to say that it is highly differentiated. It comprises a large number of different social worlds. A man may find himself in a situation where two men, both related to him but unrelated to one another, are in some form of conflict in which both appeal to him for support. In this predicament the only solution is to remain neutral, since it would be sinful to act against a kinsman except under great provocation. But generally such a situation extends rather than restricts the range of kinship obligations; towards a person who, although not a kinsman himself, is closely related to a kinsman, a man ought to act with more consideration and less hostility than is usual between men who are unrelated.
